DIY natural face wash

A simple and gentle recipe guide for natural cleaning

Washing your face is a fundamental part of a skincare routine – but it doesn’t have to involve harsh surfactants, synthetics or drying. In this part of Formulation School, you’ll learn how to make your own gentle, natural facial cleanser with caring and effective ingredients.

Why choose a natural face wash?

Conventional cleansers can sometimes contain sulfates, synthetic fragrances, and other ingredients that disrupt your skin's microbiome or dry it out. A homemade face wash, on the other hand, can be customized to your skin type and is often both gentler and more sustainable.

Recipe: Gentle face wash with oats and aloe vera

Total: 100 g – for daily use, suitable for sensitive skin

Ingredient Amount Function
Aloe vera juice (organic) 64g Moisturizing, soothing base
Glycerin (eco) 5g Moisture binder
Oat extract (water soluble) 10g Softening and anti-inflammatory
Decyl glucoside 15g Mild, natural cleansing surfactant
Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate 5g Natural preservative
Lavender essential oil 0.5 g (about 10 drops) Soothing and antibacterial scent
Xanthan gum 0.5g Light thickening for gel feel

Instructions:

  1. Mix aloe vera juice, glycerin, and oat extract in a sanitized container.

  2. Make a slurry of glycerin and xanthan gum. Then add it to the aloe vera juice and oat extract and mix well until there are no lumps left.
  3. Add decyl glucoside and stir slowly so that it does not foam.

  4. Add preservative and essential oil. Stir gently.

  5. Pour into a pump bottle or flip-top bottle. Done!

Tip:

  • Customize the scent: You can replace the lavender oil with, for example, essential geranium, mandarin, or leave it completely scent-free.

  • For oily skin: Add a little white willow extract or green tea extract for a balancing effect.

  • Shelf life: Approximately 4–6 months if stored in a dark and cool place.
